Controversy Over Grimoires

The very obvious controversy over the modern grimoire, and over the old grimoires produced from the medieval era, and Middle Ages, is simply whether or not the rituals and spells there contained are real. Do the spells work, what kind of danger is there, and so on. Well, if you’re so keen to know whether or not something is fiction, go on and try it. Unless you feel as though you are damning your immortal soul to the deepest circles of hell, then there’s really nothing to worry about.

The controversy side that so often goes unexamined is the fact that many experts, and distinguished historians usually agree that the majority of grimoires are written by members of the clergy. The education required to write, and study the science behind much of the contents of grimoires that have surfaced over the years, –in the Middle Ages, would have been restricted to religious colleges. It’s interesting then, that any clergyman would have been so interested in the different ways to summon demons, and angels. Where did they learn the rituals, in order to record them?

So far, I realize I have not made my point, that there is a controversy involved here, so much as a mystery. Throughout history, the Christian religious sects have warred both with other religious groups, and have suffered great internal conflicts as well. Is it any wonder that a religion so steeped in violence, might produce a few books that seem to contain various indicators that the writer was not exactly a pious man of benevolent nature? Were the grimoires that surfaced from the medieval era remnants of some well kept religious secrets? We may never know, but the possibility is there. With so much dissent within the Catholic religion in modern times, it’s no wonder that people are starting to open their eyes about what sort of organizations so many people have put their faith in over the years.
